- NICDAM is registered as a fully Accredited Training Provider with SAQA through the HWSETA (No HW592PA05000123), MERSETA, ETDP SETA and the SERVICES SETA.
- NICDAM has, in order to comply with the provisions of the Further Education and Training Colleges Act, No 16 of 2006, established the NICDAM COMMUNITY COLLEGE (PTY) LTD. Registration No 2012/FE07/014 which is wholly owned by the NICDAM Trust and which is set up for non-profit purposes.
- The vision of the NICDAM Community College is to play an important role in widening access to education and responding to development needs of society and individuals. The mission of the NICDAM Community College is to deliver quality needs based education, learner support and assessment through qualifications, skills programmes and short courses at levels 2, 3 and 4 of the NQF (National Qualifications Framework) which is accessible to all learners and society at large.
- NICDAM is currently (April 2017) accredited to present nine full qualifications and 23 skills programmes that fall under the HWSETA, 1 learning programme that falls under the MERSETA, 1 full qualification that falls under the SERVICES SETA and two learning programmes that fall under the EDTP SETA. All learning programmes / training material were developed by NICDAM internally. None was developed and purchased from other providers.
NICDAM is a training provider operating nationally since 1999. We have trained more than 22,000 individuals in a variety of short courses and formal accredited learning programmes. From 2007 to 2016:
- 12,978 learners obtained credits for SAQA unit standards, part qualifications or skills programmes.
- 2,663 learners obtained credits for full SAQA qualifications.
NICDAM has presented training across the country, even in the most rural areas.
Learning Programme Development
One of NICDAM’s key strengths is its expertise in the in-house creation of learning programmes and training material. All our accredited and non-accredited, informal training material have been developed by NICDAM staff members who are experts in the particular fields.
We offer a variety of services along the continuum of learning programme development:
- Training needs assessments,
- Curriculum design,
- Aligning learning content to SAQA unit standards so that learners can achieve credits for skills programmes,
- Modifying learning material to meet clients’ specific requirements,
- Customising learning content for specific target audiences,
- Development of the complete learning material package, i.e. learner manuals/guides, learner workbooks containing formative assessment activities, learner POE frameworks/formats, assessment & moderation guides containing formative and summative assessment tools and memorandums/model answers, detailed facilitators guides, PPT presentations, practical/workplace guides for mentors, practical/workplace guides for learners, including logbooks.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
- A curriculum was designed based on a training needs assessment and subsequently a learning programme developed to enhance the capacity of identified PEPFAR OVC Partners on intensive Pre- and Post-test Counselling to Increase the Uptake of quality sensitised HTS Services. The week-long training was aligned to the 2016 HTS Guidelines of the NDOH and to SAQA unit standards. Content included practical skills such as motivational interviewing and focused on the needs of OVC and adolescents. (2016)
- Developing learning material on HIV and AIDS Life Skills for Educators for the Gauteng Department of Education (2014 & 2016). The unit standards for the skills programme were from the FETC 74410 Qualification, but it was customised to the school context. Non-accredited topics were added: Child Abuse, Gender, Gender, Harmful Religious Practices and Diversity.
- A curricula toolkit on Gender Mainstreaming in HIV & AIDS Programmes for NGOs delivering ECD Programmes was designed, developed and produced. This project was undertaken for FHI and included a set of posters. (2015/2016)
- Curriculum design and the development of 3 skills programmes for the Department of Social Development on the Care of the Elderly in response to the training of care workers required in the Older Persons Act of 2006. Information additional to the unit standard assessment criteria was added to meet the legal obligations. (2016 & 2017)
- NICDAM developed two HWSETA accredited Skills Programme packages: Prevention and adherence strategies for HIV/AIDS and Advanced HIV/AIDS Counselling and Testing for AFSA, adapting and updating HWSETA FETC 74410 Qualification learning material, as well as adding newly developed material for elective unit standards not provided in the HWSETA bundle. - NICDAM has developed several capacity building and management courses for those working in the field of victim empowerment. An example of this is the Integrated Trauma Service Delivery Model, developed for the National Department of Social Ddevelopment, in which training and mentoring in integrated trauma counselling is provided to government and Civil Service Organisations officials.
- Learning material on a rehabilitation programme for social workers, aimed at Restoration and Healing for Victims of Human Trafficking was developed for the National Department of Social Development (NDSD) and the International Movement for Migration (IOM). The learning programme was offered country-wide by NICDAM and has been successfully implemented in numerous shelters across South Africa.
- Development of a curriculum for IOM designed to strengthen the Case Management Capacity of Social Workers who work with Unaccompanied Minors, including standard operating procedures aligned to the Children’s Act (No. 38 of 2005).
- Designing a curriculum and developing an accredited Learning Programme for Managers of NPOs as part of a capacity building and mentoring programme designed and implemented by the Department of Social Development for NGOs and CBOs. This training focuses on generic NPO management and has successfully been presented to NPOs that offer a broad range of services. The programme consists of 20 unit standards with a total of 79 credits. It also includes non-accredited sections for which there were no unit standards. (2011/2012)
- The Western Cape Department of Social Development, Department of Community Safety and the South African Police Service contracted NICDAM to compile a curriculum and develop learning material for the training of SAPS Victim Support Volunteers and Volunteer Coordinators. The training was unit standard based accredited training on the subjects of victim empowerment, providing victim support, volunteerism and coordination and supervision of volunteer services. (2012)
NICDAM has an operational Assessment Centre at the Head Office in Pretoria. The Centre deals with more than 1500 -1700 assessments and moderations annually. 3 full time and 1 part time registered moderators and 13 full time assessors ensure timeous and sound assessment practices. This team is supported by part time assessors and moderators as the need arises.
Apart from undertaking learner assessments from our own training, NICDAM provides assessment services to other training providers needing assistance (external assessments). This service includes the review of assessment tools, assessment and moderation as well as verification by the HWSETA.
The assessment centre is also equipped to deal with Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessments. NICDAM – with the HWSETA – conducted the first large scale Recognition of Prior (RPL) project and brought 2717 learners in the Community Home Based care sector closer to a full qualification. Through this project, NICDAM developed RPL tools and processes equipping us to conduct RPL assessment against all the unit standards and qualifications that we are registered for.

Mentoring & Coaching
Mentoring and coaching is an integrated part of NICDAM’s training methodology. Mentoring takes place in the post classroom, practical workplace phase. Mentors coach learners on their respective job sites and provide support to learners to complete practical activities that form part of their portfolios of evidence (POE). They work towards creating an enhancing environment for learners to apply and integrate newly assimilated theoretical knowledge in the practical work environment. Mentors also conduct assessments and give feedback to learners.
NICDAM has a team of seasoned mentors who work all over the country and are fluent in all of the local languages.
In addition to our own mentoring programmes, NICDAM presents mentoring capacity building programmes, i.e.:
- Design of a suitable mentoring model
- Selection, screening and orientation of mentors or mentoring organizations
- Building the capacity of mentors and mentoring organizations
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of a mentoring model and interventions
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
- DFID/Department of Social Development appointed NICDAM to pilot the Organisational Development and Management Capacity Building and Mentoring Programme for the Eastern Cape and Limpopo provinces as part of the HIV/AIDS Multisectoral Support Programmes. NICDAM also developed mentoring training, guidelines and mentoring monitoring formats for the project.
- In 2016/2017 NICDAM was appointed to provide mentoring training and support to PEPFAR OVC Implementing Partners and Organisations after training caregivers in Pre- and Post-test Counselling. The model included in service coaching of in house mentors with the purpose of entrenching a mentoring culture in the organisations. (2016/2017)
- All the SAQA training presented by NICDAM is accompanied by a structured mentor programme in the workplace to guide learners and to ensure that the learning experience is maximised.
